A hearty and sincere birthday greeting to a true American Hero, Steve Forbes! As fate would have it, he was not to be president, not back then, anyway. But he looked great today, this morning, on Fox News, and, who knows, he may yet be president, someday. The thing I admire most about this man is his integrity, his honesty. Maybe I'm being naive. I mean, he is a conservative. But his decency shines through. I would trust him to do the right thing.
Now, having just plowed through the most recent social teaching of my church, I'm not sure I can go along with everything Forbes advocates. I have the impression that he is a free market man to a fault. By that, I mean, it may be the case that he trusts this "force of nature" too much. This Force of Nature: American Capitalism, or rather, World Capitalism.
It seems to me that Pope Benedict may be onto something in his new papal teaching, "Love in Truth." Translation: social policy needs some decent direction.
Readers are referred to this teaching, this Encyclical, "Caritas in Veritate." I hope Forbes will read it and take it into consideration, because when he speaks, I, for one, listen!
